Comforting Apple Crumble

I often buy apples and forget about them until I really need to do something about them. Here in Düsseldorf, where I live, it is currently cold and rainy which calls for warm comforting food. But of course, I’ve noticed that Germans love ice cream no matter what the weather; so what better dish than something that is eaten warm with a helping of ice cream on top!

Filling Ingredients:

  • 6 Medium/Large Apples or roughly a bag
  • 1/4 Cup sugar
  • 2 Tbsp flour
  • 1 Tsp cinnamon

Topping Ingredients:

  • 1 Cup flour
  • 1/3 Cup Sugar
  • 1/3 Cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 Tsp cinnamon
  • 1/8 Tsp ground ginger
  • 1/4 Tsp salt
  • 1/2 Cup chilled unsalted butter

Preparations:

  • Preheat the oven to 170 degrees Celsius.
  • Starting with your topping, cut the butter into small cubes and add them to a bowl.
  • In the same bowl, add the rest of the topping ingredients.
  • Start to slowly and gently mix the ingredients with your hands while also squeezing the butter.
  • Continue until the mixture reaches a sandy and clumpy texture, and set aside.
  • Peel, core and chop your apples into small cubes.
  • Place the cubed apples in a bowl and mix them into the remainder of the filling ingredients.
  • In a baking dish, place the apple mixture at the bottom, then add the topping on top.
  • Bake for about 45 min or until golden on the top.
  • Serve warm with a side of vanilla ice cream!
